About the artwork: These photos are a reflection of my ongoing journey to heal from the shame I’ve felt as a Mexican American growing up in a primarily white neighborhood. I was in high school when I shot my first rolls of film. Given the opportunity to choose a meaningful topic for my final photo project, I chose racism. My friends didn’t get it. The most memorable piece was a double exposure and for this art show I wanted to pay homage to my earliest works as a BIPOC woman photographer.
About the artist: Coralee Hernandez Zabriskie is a film and digital photographer based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Born a Chicana in the Central Valley of California, she draws inspiration from the streets her ancestors walked and the fields they worked. Beyond her rich background, she also finds great influence in international films, poetry, and editorial photography. Coralee’s work itself ranges from portrait to documentary to special events, each reflecting the many parts of herself she loves to explore—she is ever evolving.
