My experience has felt like a “domino effect” where questioning one core belief triggered a chain reaction and suddenly all my dominos had fallen. In re-examining and dismantling my faith system and worldview, I have found beauty. In this piece, the domino lying flat depicting a bird is an ode to my first tattoo of two scissor-tailed flycatchers. The duo of birds in flight represent inner strength and fortitude, yin and yang, and the dynamics of love and friendship with people in my life. This domino has one black dot, signifying the beginning— the first domino I will place in rebuilding my values and life.

Artist Bio: Ocean is a 22-year-old artist based in Utah, originally from California. In February, I lost my grandmother, one of the greatest anchors in my life. Her absence left an ache that reshaped everything, and in that stillness, I found myself reaching for signs of renewal. The Tetons rise dark and steady in the background of this piece, a reminder of the heaviness we all carry. While vibrant autumn leaves light the foreground with color and life, albeit fleeting. It’s a landscape suspended between seasons, between grief and hope. The inspiration for this work is the belief that spring always returns. Even in the deepest winter, time moves, hearts heal, and life continues to turn its pages. Nothing in this world is permanent, not our pain, not our seasons, not even ourselves, and that transience is part of what makes life so heartbreakingly beautiful. The impermanence of life—fragile and astonishingly temporary—is so precious. I can only hope I will see my grandmother again. Until then I will honor each new season and every new page of my life. This painting is my reminder that healing is a cycle, and that even after great loss, color finds its way back.

Artist Bio: Born and raised in Utah, I’ve always been drawn to the beauty of nature.
