This practice has helped me reframe experiences that seem shattering into ways for the once-whole-beauty to become a fractured one; each fractile taking on its own bit of unique beauty. In teaching, I aim not to sort students by perceived talent, but to help them discover ways of seeing and representing architecture with clarity and feeling. For that reason, I draw inspiration from the Analytique tradition of the Beaux-Arts, which encourages both precision and expressive interpretation. The three drawings presented here reflect the principles I try to convey in both teaching and practice. They are hand-drawn. My technique approaches the edge of exhaustive precision while still allowing the humanity of presence, character, and essential experience to shine through. A hard-lined drawing can lack warmth, while a freehand drawing is less formal and therefore more approachable. In it, one can see the mistakes, and those mistakes invite viewers of any skill level into it by saying, “You are welcome here.” Architectural drawings of this sort should say only what is necessary. I tell my students to say it clearly, say it beautifully, and say it once. That may mean showing only half of the facade and half of the section, isolating an enlarged fragment, or pulling a structure apart to reveal what cannot otherwise be seen. Each composition is an attempt to convey the feeling, experience, and character of the subject as I encountered it.

While the vignette shown in this drawing alone focuses on the first-hand experience of the visitor, Spedale degli Innocenti is often remembered for its colonnade, yet its painted frescoes, ornament, and surface detail are equally vital to its character. The result—an unpredictable labyrinth of oil paint, canvas, fabric, thread, paper, beads, and other materials—is as luminous as it is provocative, a flash of the unconscious, a dream, a moment of déjà vu. Picking up objects that might otherwise languish in scrap heaps, second-hand clothing stores, or boxes of discarded papers, fabrics, and memories, Kathryn's art reintegrates the power of transformed media with therapeutic promise of beauty and artistic experience. In these paintings, sculptures, and installations, the possibility of refashioning the world of discarded consumption becomes an artistic reality, something more than an aspiration, a wholly new experience in itself. To experience Kathryn's art is to realize that the very fabric of our culture and everyday lives can be recast and reclaimed, just as nature does in its endless march of life and desire. The oddness of the human figures, the opalescence of the textures, the quirkiness of the colors—all of these are the life blood of a culture revised. Layer upon layer, knowledge and experience presses into us—knowledge acquired precept upon precept—each moment shaping perception, identity, and choice. In this piece, I imitate the geological process with mason-stained porcelain, compressing coil upon coil, layering, folding and sanding. The form twists, opens, and closes in on itself, suggesting an organic mind at work: expanding to receive, contracting to discern, turning ideas over until they take shape. Growth is often nonlinear—cyclical, intuitive, and layered rather than straight. At our core is an innate sense of identity forged in a crucible of experience. This work reflects an ongoing process of becoming. We are not fully formed; we are forming. Each fold is a choice. Each exposed line is a history. Each twist is an act of agency. If we can bend our minds around accepting the layered nature of who we are—contradictions, intuitions, strength, vulnerability—then we begin to claim the authority that has always been ours.
Sovereignty is sacred co-authorship with God. Growing up in Rhode Island, I spent countless hours on the Cliff Walk with my family, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the grand estates of America's Gilded Age. It was a place we visited often; I think my mother especially loved the beauty of the architecture rising above the sea. As a child, I was captivated by the scale, craftsmanship, and elegance of these historic mansions. Their architecture sparked my imagination and fostered an early appreciation for art, beauty, and the relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape. For me, this work is about more than beautiful architecture overlooking the ocean. It is about nostalgia, belonging, and the way certain places stay with us long after we have left them behind. The memories I made there with my family remain some of my most treasured, and this painting is a reflection of both the place itself and the lasting impression it left on me.

Artist Bio: Corinne Sonderegger is a Utah-based artist and art educator whose work examines the intersection of place and memory. I am currently living in South Salt Lake as an architect, mother of three young children, and finally, as a practicing artist. Bouncing back and forth from different scales of projects—ranging from community planning to brush strokes—allows me to understand the world at varying paces. There’s something about the back and forth that allows a glimpse into a big picture of connection while also allowing you to revel in the beauty of detail.

My work is at times created alongside my children, from whom I find inspiration in their own freeing artistry, as well as in the experience of discovering life together. I create art that longs to invite imagination and spiritual reflection as I abstractly address ideas of nature, the built environment and the communities of individuals that inhabit both. I use opaque and transparent methods to create the essence of light and water, shadow and discovery. Pure materials and elements found in nature will be brought into or alongside my canvases often to humble me with their creation and I plead to translate even a bit of their wonder and whimsy into my work. I hope to forever inhabit the naivety and passion of a student of life, and try always to explore and play while creating.
