About the Artwork:
The image is deeply personal—a visual representation of a moment in an epic battle of endurance. My identity, abilities, intra- and interpersonal capacity to exist in harmony with self and family. This is woman, incapsulate in a seemingly irreparable vehicle—a postpartum mind and body. Overwhelmed cyclically by depression, anger, guilt, anxiety, regret, rage, self-pity, exhaustion, pain, and failure. Forgetting who she is. Acquainted with who she has become. Medicated to prevent the preventable. Side effects blunting an ability to feel joy or empathy, forgiveness or forgiving.
And finally, through the fog of a broken existence, she hears a whisper: You are a survivor.
About the Artist:
Raised in Northern MN by starving artists, Jordan received a BA in Art Education from Brigham Young University in 2008. She taught visual art at a public charter school in West Valley City for seven years. While there she was awarded a Beverly Taylor Sorensen Award for Excellence in Secondary Art Education in 2016. Jordan is a stay-at-home mom and ultimately has found that her roles as mother and artist tend to inform one another. She is adored by a brilliant spouse and two children who aspire to draw and paint like mom does, whether on paper, canvas, or the new couch in the upstairs living room. She currently resides in Rochester, MN.
