Artist Statement: As I became a mother, I found myself seeing Eve not only as the first mother, but as the first visionary because she saw us. Eve looked beyond what was and envisioned what could be. She exchanged the comfort of Eden for the possibility of growth. She recognized agency as the gift that would allow humanity to learn, create, love, and become. To our first earthly mother, this painting is my expression of gratitude. Her gift made all of my favorite people possible. Inspired by Jenna Rakuita’s essay “True Joy Cannot Be Found in the Garden,” published in Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought.
Artist Bio: Addie Yager is a self-taught contemporary artist based in Cheney, Washington. Working primarily in acrylic and oil, she creates geometric paintings inspired by landscapes, wildlife, and the human experience. Drawing from the varied landscapes of the American West and Midwest, her work distills terrain into bold color, rhythm, and structure, inviting viewers to find beauty and meaning in the spaces between. Her recent work explores themes of motherhood, faith, and the sacred through a contemporary lens.
