About the Artist: This painting began as a way to explore pairs of contrasting ideas and my place between them: earthly and heavenly, manmade and natural, flawed and perfect. I chose a motif that is commonly used to represent heaven and earth—a circle inscribed in a square—to examine their connection. The composition reminds me of the porthole of a ship, which provides light, air, and views of the outside world to dark quarters below deck. Although this small opening essentially narrows the viewer’s field of vision, allowing only a portion of the landscape to be viewed at a time, these tiny glimpses accumulate and can broaden perspectives over time.
About the Artist: Rachel Crockett Smith, an Arizona native, is an abstract artist whose work is informed by color. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries on the East Coast and in the Mountain West. Smith earned her BFA at Brigham Young University. She currently lives with her husband, four young daughters, and two dogs in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.
