Artist Statement: The Flor de Piña (Pineapple Flower) dance is a traditional dance from the Tuxtepec region of Oaxaca, Mexico, performed by women wearing colorful regional huipiles and carrying pineapples on their shoulders. The dance celebrates the cultural diversity of Oaxaca and is known for its graceful movements, vibrant costumes, and the way the dancers display the embroidered designs of their communities. Artist Bio: Lindsay Ruiz is an artist, dancer, and full-time high school art teacher. She met and married her husband Miguel, who was born and raised in Mexico City, while attending BYU. A desire to understand, cultivate, and participate in his Latin culture led to her involvement in the Latino folk dancing community. She has spent the last fifteen years traveling and researching the traditions and customs in Central and Latin America.
Lindsay’s work can be described as bright, bold, clean, and traditional. It is a fresh contemporary take on traditional themes. Her choice of color typically derives from the original folk attire from the regions depicted. She strives for authenticity in all of her work as she combines her love of art and dance.
