Artist Statement: This piece is based on the view from my backyard—but reimagined without the houses, fences, and signs of development. It’s a way of looking at the land through memory and imagination, wondering what it once was or could have been. There’s a kind of quiet loss in realizing how much has changed, but also a peace in reconnecting with the land itself. For me, it’s about softening the noise of the present and honoring what might still live beneath it.
Artist Bio: Raised in Manhattan, Kansas, and born in Provo, Utah, Ashley’s upbringing has shaped the way she explore themes of gender, identity, and spirituality. These subjects have become even more significant to her after a faith crisis led to her departure from Mormonism, a personal journey that has deeply influenced her art and the way she examines belief systems and selfhood. Art has given her an outlet to express herself and connect with others.
Ashley works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking, and installation. Central to her practice is the exploration of the intersection between physical and spiritual realms—particularly how belief systems shape personal and collective identity. Her artistic influences include Vincent Van Gogh, Emil Nolde, Kiki Smith, and Mary Cassatt.
Ultimately, her desire is to spark conversations about how we understand ourselves, our identities, and our beliefs. Ashley’s hope is that her work resonates on both a personal and universal level, providing viewers an opportunity to reflect on their own journeys. Whether through the quiet stillness of a landscape, curve of a figure, or the immersive atmosphere of an installation, Ashley aims to create art that fosters connection—both with one's inner experience and with others.
