Artist Statement: In Ancient China and Japan, a red maple leaf is symbolic of love, especially the beautiful and small daily pleasures that love brings. In both Ancient Greece and Rome, the red rose was associated with Aphrodite/Venus as a symbol of romance and love. Today most western cultures have continued the tradition of giving red roses as a symbolic gesture of love and romance. These symbols have been paired together in this painting to represent unity in love across borders, boundaries and cultures.
