Artist Statement: This painting is centered around the traditions of paper in Japan. A different take on the theme of this show: A New Page. In the center is an image of an iconic Japanese origami crane (origami meaning folded paper). The clouds behind the crane are a nod to Japanese block printing and the style of clouds one finds in traditional Japanese block printing. Surrounding the crane as a frame is paper cut with a scalpel in the style of Kirigami (meaning cut paper). Kirigami is another type of paper art that comes from Japan. On the frame, painted in acrylic one finds various flora that are used in traditional Japanese paper (Washi) making: Gampi, Totoro, and Kozo. Finally, as another nod to the theme of this show, one finds Origami butterflies (symbols of change and new beginnings) created from actual Japanese paper — delicate and intricately designed this paper is artwork in its own right. There is also a paper fan in the center to represent the Japanese flag’s meaning: Land of the Rising Sun.
