Domovino is a meditation on the power ancestry has to shape our lives.
This piece depicts the crumbling local chapel of the Croatian village my ancestors are from. The chapel and its surrounding landscape, though appearing peaceful and idealistic, are a reminder of the intense hardships and ethnic persecution my Serbian family experienced there through the centuries.
Learning about my ancestors has given me gratitude for my circumstances and opportunities. My ancestry has emphasized the importance of showing kindness to all, especially those different from me; I am now even more proud of where I come from and the sacrifices made by my ancestors on my behalf.
By understanding our heritage we can better understand the forces of history that have helped to make us who we are.
