About the Artist: Zoe Elwood (she/they) draws creative inspiration from memory. As their artistic practice is guided by their research into the mysterious mental faculty itself, they explore different ways that memories can surface and be expressed. In their recent series of abstract paintings, Elwood delves into the phenomenon of involuntary memory: instances in which remembering occurs spontaneously and without effort or intention. Painting with their hands and fingers to abstractly capture their own involuntary memories, they work to represent the conflict of such indefensible recollections feeling both hostile and comforting. Elwood will be presenting their paper "Materiality of Memory in Contemporary Art" at the SECAC annual conference this fall. They will then graduate with a BFA degree from UVU this winter, after which they will continue their art practice and research through an MFA program.
