Artist Statement: When I was little, my Gramma, who lived in Washington, D.C. made clothes for me and sent them to Utah. My mom used a tape measure for my waist, hips, chest, shoulders, arms. Although my outfits were often a perfect fit, even with precise measurements, sometimes they weren’t. Others measure us, our external features, our bodies, or accomplishments, our personal traits. Sometimes we measure up, but sometimes we don’t. I believe that to our Heavenly Parents, our worth is immeasurable because of who we are. Beloved. Divine from birth.
In this encaustic painting, I use layers of encaustic wax creating a dress, including hand crocheted lace, patterns, stitches, chalk paint, pastels and material on a figure only partially seen stretching a tape measure. The tape measure goes off the painting between stretching and open reaching arms: an incomplete figure because her worth is immeasurable. And her possibility is limitless because she is Divine.
