Kimball wrestled with the church’s priesthood and temple ban, which prevented people of African descent from full gospel participation, he sought revelation by asking God, and by studying the issue in his heart and in his mind. One of the ways he studied it in his mind was by reading Lester Bush’s article in a 1973 volume of Dialogue journal, which revealed there was no legitimate scriptural basis for the ban. Kimball read and marked the article.
