Artist Statement: “Madre Eva - The Order of Eve” contemplates the inherent power of women. In the Spring 2020 edition, “The Order of Eve: A Matriarchal Priesthood”, anuthor Kyra N. Krakos asks the question “What is a woman’s priesthood?”. She quotes Elder Oaks who taught in 2014, “We are not accustomed to speaking of women having the authority of the priesthood in their Church callings, but what other authority can it be?” Krakos states, “Elder Oaks clarified that priesthood is the authority and power of God. By extension, that must also be the authority and power of our Heavenly Mother. “ Eve in her bravery led with remarkable faith as she chose progress and love over comfort in the Garden of Eden. My mother’s family in Santiago, Chile for centuries belonged to the Catholic faith. In that tradition the Bishops carry a ceremonial crozier, (the “cross bearer”), a staff, often with a stylized fiddle head or fern head, in the shape of a shepherd’s crook, symbolizing their calling and duty to care for God’s flock. Madre Eva is standing in the ferns and fiddleheads below a fig tree. The ferns represent growth, renewal, resilience, inner strength. The fig tree historically has symbolized in many cultures peace, prosperity, and spiritual growth. We see Eve in her power given to her by God and honor her strength and wisdom for the benefit of all mankind.
Artist Bio: Julie Ann Lake-Díaz is a Chilean-American artist who lives in South Jordan, Utah with her family. Her work is primarily in oil paint and centered on themes of latinidad, belonging, as well as spiritual themes, and stories of women.
