Artist: Jennifer Barton
Bio: As an artist, I bring gestural marks to my lived experience—the small, intimate spaces where I encounter the world. My primary subjects emerge from these environments: The textures of domestic interiors, the interactions between family and friends, the shifting light and landscapes that shape these spaces.
I find joy in the act of observing and recording, layering and transforming these moments through drawing and painting. I respond to shape, light, and color, often letting one shape obscure another, allowing the composition to evolve and present new ideas. As the work progresses, possible narratives emerge, and I discover new ways to tell a story. The human figure is central to this unfolding process. Even when not explicitly represented, its presence is always implied.
Through both singular and multiple figures, I explore the human need for community as well as individual identity, and the ways in which we navigate our solitary lives and shared experiences. Memory also plays a crucial role, informing the process and adding depth and complexity to the layers of meaning in each image. Each work becomes a meditation on the relationships we form, the spaces we inhabit, and the emotional landscapes that connect us all.
