Artist Statement:
I am very grateful to live an artistic life, it gives me hope in the future and a belief in the beauty of life and the goodness of people. Artistic gifts can be seen in so many facets of life, especially creative thinking. It is wonderful how people in all walks of life use their imagination and ability to reason through creative thinking to resolve problems. Art has given me more courage to be myself and to draw upon the gifts that I have been given. I feel the world simply fall away when I paint or write poetry or create a collage. There is an inner peace and happiness that comforts me and gives me the faith to keep going. I am inspired especially by children and nature, flowers and animals. I had a very happy childhood, we always lived in the country, where nature was very special to me. My family was very creative as well, there are many musicians, composers, artists, writers, filmmakers and poets. I feel a great sense of gratitude to them for sharing such a wonderful heritage and love of the arts.
Artist Bio:
I am originally from California, but I spent the majority of my life in the Pacific Northwest. The beauty of nature was very inspiring to me and later became a significant influence in my life as an artist. I began writing poetry when I was eleven, later writing children’s books as well. I studied art for a short time after high school, but felt more compelled to learn on my own, spending hours reading about art, architecture, literature and other creative arts. It seemed as if I was trying to recapture something within myself that had been lost over the years. After meeting my husband Mike, I realized I had found someone who also loved to be creative, which gave me more courage to see myself as an artist. I began creating small fairy furniture from nature in 1987 and later Mike created nature art as well. In 1995, we were invited to have our art from nature in the one year inaugural exhibit, “The Tree of Life”, at the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. Our nature art was also exhibited at AVAM in 2012. We were so happy to have our beautiful pieces shown at such an unusual and amazing museum. Our natural fairytale pieces have been featured in many books and magazines and have sold in galleries and shops throughout the U.S. as well as several other countries. In 2015, our first book “Fairy House” was published, followed by two other books, “Fairy Village” and “F is for Fairy”. We felt such a great sense of gratitude for such wonderful opportunities. Later, we began working in other mediums: painting, sculpting and collage and also turned our interests to collecting antiques, seeing the amazing artistic value in the old and historical. Art has permeated our lives for many years, individually and as a couple and we are truly grateful for such a beautiful life filled with the arts.
