Artist Statement: As I stepped into motherhood, my own mother was finding herself in an empty house, watching her children grow and blossom. As I wrestled with depression and anxiety while holding a tiny baby, my mother mourned the death of her spouse and the presence of her children. The newness of motherhood was just as shocking as the newness of aging and evolving motherhood for my mother. In starting a new year, I have gained empathy and a willingness to listen to the experiences of the women around me. It seems as if a woman’s pain and suffering is often combined with the beauty of motherhood. Turning a new page or starting a new year can seem daunting, but there is much beauty in this darkness and uncertainty.
