Artist's statement: This piece is about the small, everyday changes that indicate that something new has happened, that a change has occurred. Transition doesn't always announce itself in grand, sweeping shifts; small, subtle changes in habit or ritual can often be just as clear an indicator that something is different. Each morning is an opportunity to move toward something new, each choice that we make could reflect a change in direction. This piece is deeply personal to me, and I wanted to focus on subtle shifts in temperature, lost edges, and a feeling of upward movement, all to help tell the story about the simple things that can represent the start of a new day.
Artist Bio: Garrett Olsen started oil painting in 2021 at the age of 30, having abandoned art in high school after several disagreements with his art teacher. His first attempts with a brush ignited a passion for the medium that has only grown since. Garrett works in tech during the day, parents his two boys during the morning & evening, and paints at night. He currently focuses on atmospheric, expressive realism, and enjoys painting landscapes, interiors, portraits, still life, and just about anything in between (except flowers). He lives in Herriman, Utah.
