Artist Statement: While traveling through Arches National Park, I was surprised to see a rock formation resembling a group of women. As we drove past, I thought that they could be called "the matriarchs". After photographing them and enjoying our time at the park, we came home and I began to paint them, giving them the royal, strong, and powerful, yet kind energy these rock mothers gave me. As I finished the piece, I decided to look up the formation to see if it already had a name. I was greatly disappointed. Their name was "The Three Gossips" or "The Gossiping Sisters". Undaunted, I'm calling them "The Matriarchs", as a proclamation that women can be seen as powerful, strong, and supportive. I dedicate this painting to all the women who have come before me and paved the path. Thank you, women everywhere, for your unwavering protection and support.
Artist Bio: Sarah McDonald is a self-taught artist that grew up in the middle of Wyoming. She began painting regularly 3 years ago, and finds that landscape paintings are only enjoyable if she's been to the location and thoroughly enjoyed herself in the nature first. Hiking, climbing, frolicking, hammocking, sunbathing, you name it. Each of her paintings hold a specific memory and by painting it, she attempts to pass that memory on to the viewers.
