About the Artwork:
For a while I’ve been contemplating the deep influence our mothers have on us. Yes genetically, but also in how they raise us and influence us throughout our lives. When I was very young I have very specific memories of my mother telling me how compassionate I was. I remember at the time thinking I’m not that compassionate – I’m just doing what you told me to or acting how I thought you’d want me to. But I held on to that compliment and worked and worked to become (I hope) a more compassionate and kind person, like my mom said I was. There are so many traits and interests that I have that can see reflected in my mother’s life, in my grandmothers’ lives, in my great grandmothers’ lives, and I’m so grateful for all they have taught and continue to teach me.
Mothers have a special power in our lives and I wanted to reflect that even in the shape of the canvas. A downward facing triangle is an ancient symbol of femininity & motherhood. The plant is symbolic of new growth and the power we have to nurture and bring forth goodness and hope in future generations and ourselves. The halos are representative both of those who have passed on and of sacredness but also of light and knowledge and passing that forward. The circles throughout represent eternity and cyclical connection. All visible figures are connected by touching hands symbolizing relationships, love, and support.
