About the Artwork:
Throughout an anxious and painful pregnancy, I took comfort in the fact that my son and I were in it together; he was with me for every minute, hour, day, and in a way we were as one and the same person.
Shell shocked after a traumatic birth, I cradled him on the bus ride every day to seek refuge in therapy; in his carrier, sleeping head on my chest or awake and wailing from the depths of his lungs, he was still one with my body.
We don’t hold each other in the same way anymore, the physical distance growing as he finds his independence and discovers who he will become. But the shape of us remains: he is of me and I of him.
This painting represents that inextricable bond between mother and child, the push and pull of learning to know one another and how to let one another go while still holding each other close.
