Artist Statement: There are three life lessons I have learned from geology. This piece illustrates these three principles. Faults are fortunate: Gold veins are formed when magma carries the mineral up to the Earth’s surface and deposits the precious metal into cracks and faults to eventually rest in these deformed structures. Often we see our own cracks and flaws as unforgivable, to be hidden or fixed. Yet, it is often those perceived flaws that yield our greatest strengths. Repetition is Growth: Striations of Rock and marbled movements of stone, tell a story of accumulation. Layer by layer, line by line, the various slabs form the very ground we walk upon. We too accumulate knowledge and wisdom in a similar way: bit by bit, precept upon precept. Maximize Opportunities: A gyroid is a geometric and organic form manifested by a mathematical phenomenon. It is built upon a principle of maximizing surface area and therefore possibilities. We are creatures of choices and possibilities. With each action, we take our accumulated knowledge and make our choices, sometimes to our benefit, sometimes to our detriment. There are infinite possibilities of how we use our agency, but it eventually makes us into the people we are.
