Artist Statement: A girl grows up receiving many tiny cuts Her community assures her these are not cuts there is no problem here She wonders agonizes Why do these not-cuts sting? How do they bleed? Will no one see her pain? She shrinks and sinks away from peace and light “What is wrong with me?” Until one day She reads the words of one like her but wise and bold enough to disagree And now the cuts have names: Sexism Patriarchy Misogyny Purity culture Shame The philosophies of men, mingled with scripture Finally finally she tends her wounds and they begin to heal Finally she grows strong enough to whisper her truth and she reaches for light, stars, hope Her own not filtered through a man This piece pays homage to the women’s issues of the dialogue, beginning in 1971 with the pink issue, followed by the red issue and many more women-centered issues and articles since.
Artist Bio: Violet is a Canadian-born printmaker and oil painter. She is currently based in Utah, a great place to explore her favorite themes of feminism, faith, and the great outdoors.
