Artist Statement: We are taught that opposition in all things is part of God's plan. To give purpose to the end of our creation, there must be both joy and sadness, peace and sorrow, hope and despair-all things must be compound in one (2 Nephi 2:11-12). Our plans and dreams of reaching our divine potential and purpose without any opposition will inevitably be faced with dark nights of hard-ship, struggle, failure and hopelessness.

When this dark night comes, we called to reshape our narrow concept of how we thought we would fulfill the measure of our creation. What we thought we were intended for and capable of is now irrelevant and obsolete as we are forced to expand our minds and hearts to the alternate possibilities of growth and progression that are still available to us as women. We know that all things work together for our good and our challenges will be to our bene-fit, for "all things have been done in the wisdom of Him who knoweth all things" (2 Nephi 2:24) "When the Dark Night Came" explores this dichotomy with the contrasting and mirroring daytime and nighttime landscapes. Underneath the painting is also an overlapping circle pattern with emphasized vesica pi-scis to further illustrate this dual nature of our mortal experience. To fulfill the purpose of our creation in this life there must be defeated in order for us to come off conquerors.
