About the Artwork: This painting began as a way to explore pairs of contrasting ideas and my place between them: earthly and heavenly, manmade and natural, flawed and perfect. I chose a motif that is commonly used to represent heaven and earth—a circle inscribed in a square—to examine their connection. The composition reminds me of the porthole of a ship, which provides light, air, and views of the outside world to dark quarters below deck. Although this small opening essentially narrows the viewer’s field of vision, allowing only a portion of the landscape to be viewed at a time, these tiny glimpses accumulate and can broaden perspectives over time.
