Artist Statement: “Approaching the Compassionate” embodies ancient Islamic design principles. Its tessellation showcases the timeless motif of The Compassionate Breath, where the 8-pointed star symbolizes the inhaled breath and the 4-pointed star signifies the exhaled breath. The Compassionate is one of the titles of Allah. Etched into the surface are authentic scribe-marks, reminiscent of the traditional tools used in crafting this pattern—a straight-edge and a compass. These marks represent the spiritual creation that always precedes the physical creation. The layered composition of the piece metaphorically signifies humanity’s quest for connection with the divine, each layer representing a step closer to understanding and enlightenment.
Artist Biography: I’m Karl Hale, an artist and engineer.
My sculptures bring together intuitive, right-brained art and logical, left-brained science. I hope that people who identify with either end of that spectrum find inspiration when they view my creations.
As an engineer-turned-artist, I am passionate about creating art that is accessible and engaging for all walks of life.
Due to my background in engineering, much of my art is based on mathematical concepts. I frequently use geometric patterns such as circle packing and tessellations to create interactive works filled with movement and familiar shapes that speak to younger (and less young) audiences.
