Titles:
(1) I Hope I Don’t Lose Myself - In the beginning of assimilation there is hope- hope you’ll be embraced, hope you’ll be able to be authentic, hope that your culture and tradition will survive.
(2) At First It Doesn’t Hurt So Much - The first time you assimilate to fit in with the majority you don’t notice feeling any different, so you do it again and again. Until you realize, one day, that you’re a shell of who you used to be.
(3) This Must Be What Dying Feels Like - Assimilation is losing oneself in favor of what you think you “should be.” You’re cut off from your ancestors, traditions, and your own heart. In numerous ways, assimilation is a form of death for people of color.
