Artist Bio: Ai Ya is a Taishanese multi-disciplinary artist based in Salt Lake City. She immigrated to Utah with her parents from China in the early 2000s and has been living in Salt Lake City ever since. Currently, she specializes in pottery and digital illustration by incorporating traditional Chinese and Asian techniques. The phrase “ai ya” is a common Chinese phrase that she uses to encompass the ups and downs of life, and it is also reflective of her feelings towards pottery. Her work explores her cultural identities and nostalgia and what keeps her tethered to her family & ancestors and their collective future.
