Artist Bio: Janessa Lewis is a South Asian American artist who was born in 1998 in Utah and is from Springville, Utah. She explores through art how our experiences with the earth are both universally accessible and individually unique. The earth is the common thread that weaves between nations, cultures, and communities, tying individuals together through shared experience and a foundation of empathy. Through visual symbols and imagery often seen in land, she communicates ideas around the themes of memory and place, neglect and abuse, identity and our relationships with others and the earth. Typically gesturing at elements of land, she manipulates line, color and composition through various mediums to call into question the interactions and experiences that we have with land. While inspired by specific locations from Lewis' personal history, she implements elements and symbols that are relatable to all. She expects her audience to question their personal experiences with land and the influences it has had in their life.
