Artist Statement: Drawing from catholic imagery of the sacred heart of Jesus, this altar invites us to question which kinds of suffering we make sacred and what kinds of suffering are just, suffering. Why do we seek to make sense out of struggle, and is that practice holy or hedonistic?
Artist Bio: Maddison Tenney is a Queer Latter-Day Saint, artist and activist. She grew up in Oregon and rural Utah. She is currently finishing a bachelors degree in English Literature with minors in Art and Global Women's Studies at BYU. Her work explores the liminality of her identity and her relationship with deity. In addition to ceramics, she also works in painting, digital, and fiber arts.
