About the Artwork:

Vanitas are a genre of still life paintings that address themes of the impermanence of life, the certainty of death, and the pleasures of life.
In this piece representing these ideas…ephemerality with the snuffed out candle in an Iittala votive. A Tridacna Gigas clam shell holding a Lápiz Lazuli sphere and silver beaded necklace from Chile, and in the back a Chinese Cloisonné vase.
The iconic Eames carving of a crow symbolizes not only death but the crow has represented change and transformation.
Depicting pleasures are the kiwi, a fruit Chile is known for cultivating, also a score of Handel’s “Messiah”, music that I have loved to sing and expresses so many of these ideas in one complete work.
