Artist Statement: I always have a “family flag” painting going. Really, it’s just where I use up the extra paint from my other pieces—laying down colors next to other colors, making lines just for fun, and seeing what happens. The name “family flag” is kind of a joke, because by the time I’m done, the flag is so complex there’s no way a kid—or even an adult—could recreate it like we do in elementary school when we make flags for our family or state.
Artist Bio: I like art that’s simple and naïve and childlike—but with a kind of subtle sophistication. I care about space, color, and line. I do abstract art that looks like abstract art, and I also do simple house and city paintings with monsters. I don’t avoid the human figure—sometimes I use traditional human-like figures, and other times I add a monster or dinosaur-like figure that has sentient, human-like feelings. Almost all of my paintings are narrative in some way. I often have words or phrases written somewhere in the painting that add to the narrative.
