Artist Statement: A Filipina proudly wears a “barong tagalog” shirt, a garment that was once only traditionally worn by men. The “barong tagalog” is an elaborately embroidered shirt, worn untucked, usually made of piña silk or jusi fabric, and is the iconic traditional clothing of post-colonial Philippines, which symbolizes independence and Filipino nationalism. Women historically had their more feminine version, the “baro't saya” or shirt and blouse. But in more recent years, in the spirit of gender equality, women now wear the “barong tagalog” which has undergone several transformations over the years, including the cut, the shape, and has become retranslated into other garments and into high fashion. I’ve always been inspired by the embroidery on that creates an embossed effect, which I have retranslated here in this piece.
