About the artwork: I created this piece, “Graven Upon the Palms," in 2021 in response to the wave of Asian hate attacks, especially directed at Asian women. The title comes from Isaiah 49:16, “Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.” While this is a self portrait of how I looked at the age of 4, this girls represents any Filipina girl or Asian girl. She confronts the viewer, and arrests the viewer’s attention with her gesture to stop and consider her, to look her in the eye and see her as a person, a person with a story, a child of God. "Anak na babae" means daughter and the hands represent ancestors upon whose palms she graven.
About the artist: Filipina American artist, Rose Datoc Dall is an award winning contemporary figurative painter known for her bold colors and graphic compositions. Her most iconic pieces are sacred works on the life of the Savior. Rose received her BFA in Fine Art Studio and Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Rose is a wife and mother of 4 adult children, and grandmother or “Lola” to 3 grandchildren.
