Artist Statement: I’ve been working on this piece for years, but have never felt totally settled with it. In my professional life designing houses, I try to embrace process. Clients need someone to talk through expectations. Construction takes time and has delays. Timelines are never ideal. Light fixtures don’t always work in the space you planned them to. Sometimes in life and houses, the things that make an impact don’t come along for a while. The idea might not strike when we want it. The “just right” chair for that spot in the living room cannot be found. The obvious decision is hidden from view and we feel stuck. That’s how this piece was for me. I liked where it was going but something wasn’t right. It has had two final additions to make me happy with it. The primitive frame speaks to how life isn’t always so polished, either--everyone’s lives are cobbled together parts. We also added the white grid. Graph paper has been my constant companion since childhood, and the addition of the white grid feels like leaving a bit of myself on the piece. Like the other pieces in the show, I cannot separate myself from the concept of home and nostalgia when thinking of architecture. We recognize the iconography of home and have an association with it. This piece takes me to that place.

Artist Bio: Anson Peterson Fillerup lives in Draper, Utah and works professionally as an architectural and interior designer. His artistic work is an extension of his philosophy when designing houses with a focus on simplification and nostalgic forms. Color and the way we relate to it has been a subject of exploration for years. Recent work has an emphasis on patterns and forms that trigger memory. Abstraction and architecture both have been an obsession since adolescence.
