Artist Statement: Haunt and Memory is a piece that explores death and its relationship to the living. My aunt recently passed away and it made me think about death and its meaning in our existence. I took the view that there are memories locked away inside of us, inside of things and places. Experiences that happened while others were living that are an important part of existence. We get so caught up in our day to day lives that we really don’t have time to stop and give a lot of time to thinking about the deceased. I have a box of journals from my grandmother who died 24 years ago, yet to be read.
My painting asks the question: What if you could talk to ghosts of the past and listen to their stories? How would it affect you? Change you? Do Ghosts have regrets for things they didn’t accomplish in their lives? What can we learn from them? The story in the mouth of the skeleton in this piece playfully asks these questions, inviting us to enjoy the levity of the work and hopefully instigating introspection about our lives and the lives of those who have gone before.
Artist Bio: I’m a Utah-based artist working in assemblage sculpture and am expanding to explore what my body of work looks like with sculpture and paintings as part of my repertoire. I have been an artist in one form or another for my entire life, always looking for ways to create and express.
