Artist Statement:
I draw inspiration from the world around me, finding fascination in every detail. My relentless passion (obsession) revolves around the interplay between color and form, the dance between light and shadow. My paintings celebrate the little things in life with a clever, playful and unexpected twist. The possibilities are endless and there is never a shortage of ideas for new work…just not enough time!! Each painting begins with a model, a carefully composed assemblage of unrelated materials and objects. Upon illumination, the magic of light and shadow emerges and the model eagerly awaits its self-portrait. Despite the eventual lightheartedness, love, joy, and humor emanating from my finished works, their creation proves a challenge and a rigorous exercise of discipline. These are true labors of love, and I adore every step in the process from inception to completion. With each new piece, I gain fresh insights, making it a continuous journey of learning and artistic growth.
Artist Bio:
Baltimore-based artist Andrea Nicole Burkom has held a paintbrush in her hand since childhood, raised by her creatively inclined parents who consistently supported her artistic passion. In 1996, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Maryland College Park. Following her graduation, and over the course of two years, she established and operated a thriving decorative painting company, specializing in wall finishes and murals—a venture she eventually sold after a decade of success. The subsequent two decades saw Andrea dedicating herself to creating commissioned artwork in her home studio, while raising her two sons. Her portfolio includes a notable range of achievements, including hundreds of pet portraits, illustrations for two children's books, live event painting, and participation in plein air painting competitions, some of which she traveled to and won awards for. During this time, she also honed her skills and technique through workshops with acclaimed artists like Lori Putnam for plein air landscape and Natalie Featherston for trompe l’oeil. Andrea's current body of work represents the culmination of her artistic journey. Her signature style exudes playful contemporary realism. Her process involves crafting intricate 3D models using an assortment of materials, which she then transforms into lifelike paintings. Her sunlit studio, resembling a treasure trove filled with an endless array of props, serves as her creative sanctuary. Andrea chooses oils as her preferred medium, captivated by their luxurious, buttery texture and vibrant, rich colors. Her aim is to provide just enough detail in her works to deceive the viewer's eye, making the subject appear almost tangible at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, the artistry of her brushwork becomes apparent. In terms of subject matter, Andrea's artistic scope knows no bounds. She thrives on the opportunity to evoke joy in both her audience and herself, embracing a diverse range of themes and concepts in her creations. Recently, Andrea unveiled her latest collection at a highly successful pop-up show hosted by Highlandtown Gallery in Baltimore, Maryland, where her art continues to captivate and delight audiences.
