Artist Statement: Like the others in this series, this piece deals with the “new beginnings” of life and death. The red circle represents the “beginning” that is death, while the golden circle represents the “beginning” that is life. Mourning doves mate for life. They also have a high rate of predation—each year 50% of mourning doves will be killed by a predator. The surviving member of the pair frequently calls to their lost mate, hence their name. One of the realities we all must deal with in life is losing someone close to us. The pairing and inevitable separation of the mourning doves us that though they come with the risk and reality of loss and grief, those bonding relationships are what gives life meaning and purpose.
