Artist Statement: Seals exhibit profound, intimate, often romantic-looking behaviors that suggest strong emotional bonds, including cuddling, “kissing,” and, in some cases, lifelong monogamy. Seals often sleep pressed together in groups for warmth, safety, and social bonding, a behavior that we perceive as deeply affectionate. They are also often seen nuzzling and resting their heads on one another, a sign of trust and comfort. These behaviors, while sometimes driven by survival instincts such as seeking warmth or identifying kin, often mirror human expressions of love, comfort, and deep social connection. Fur seals are surprisingly affectionate, especially with pups and close companions. Mother–pup devotion is one of the strongest bonds in the seal world. Mothers recognize their pups by voice and scent and will fiercely protect and nurture them. This painting reflects the power of safety and comfort of a warm, soft embrace from someone you trust.
