Artist statement: While at the Outer Banks, this summer, we wandered into a Maritime museum that had wonderful collections of fishing boats and decoys and other amazing displays. I couldn’t help but take several pictures of the old boats, with peeling paint, and the wall full of decoys. The primitive goose caught my attention, and it looked like the other decoys were admiring a thing of beauty.
Artist Bio: I paint stories. I paint dreams. My process often begins with an application of a colorful underpainting. As it dries I contemplate the story that is waiting to emerge. I am inspired by the influences growing up in Southern Colorado and being around the Latino culture—and now living in Southern Utah near many other indigenous persons. I am inspired by the lands of my ancestors, the British Isles and Scandinavia. Exotic clothing, quilts, orchids in pots and people and places. All these are my inspiration. All these things shape my artistic vision and who I am as an artist. I paint to celebrate the aspirations, the struggles, and visions of the future.
