I watch you get ready,
Sun glinting off your hair—
The struggle, the accomplishment.
I used to help you get ready
Little fingers, tiny toes.
Now you support your own weight
With all these new skills.
As I watch you get ready,
Getting older, growing wise,
I don’t want to miss a single moment.
And I hope when you can’t do it alone,
You’ll give me a call, or come back home,
And I’ll help you carry
The weight you can’t bear—
Because I am your mom.
