Artist Statement: Dinner for Three is a self portrait set in Tokyo, where I sit across from the legendary Futakuchi-onna, the woman with a hidden mouth at the back of her head. From the front she appears gentle and composed, almost forgettable. But beneath the surface is a ferocious appetite. This painting explores the tension between civility and hunger, beauty and menace, the visible self and the hidden one. In a city that dazzles and devours, the meal becomes a metaphor for ambition, desire, and the quiet monsters we carry with us.
Artist Bio: Robert Fuerer is a Swiss American painter based in Utah whose work bridges memory, landscape, and material. Trained in oil painting at Purchase College, he moves fluidly between luminous plein air scenes of the Wasatch Mountains and intricate mixed media button portraits constructed from heirloom collections. His paintings explore heritage, faith, family, and the Western terrain, often threaded with personal narrative and quiet symbolism. Influenced by time spent in both Asia and America, Fuerer’s practice blends observation with imagination. Whether working in thick oil or fastening on buttons one by one, he builds images that honor history while speaking vividly to the present.
