Artist Statement: Butterflies first emerge from their chrysalis with crumpled wings. In order to fly, they must expand their wings by pumping fluid into them before letting them dry. In this way, butterflies serve as a reminder that new beginnings don’t always start smoothly. Like this swallowtail fairy, sometimes we need to let our wings dry before we can take off.
