Artist Statement: Cosmological diagrams were often incorporated into medieval architectural settings in the form of beautiful and intricate patterns. This pair of paintings come from two such diagrams, one now found in Westminster Abbey in London, the other in Lausanne Cathedral in Switzerland. These symbolic maps are contemporary with each other and draw upon the same textual and philosophical sources. They are drawn with the architect’s tools: compass and square.

Stewardship I shows the design from the pavement in front of Westminster Abbey’s High Altar and the site of England’s coronation ritual for many centuries. The design itself is a map of the created cosmos, the interconnected web of heaven and earth. During the rite of coronation, the throne is situated at the center and the monarch pledges to be a servant of God, his people, and a worthy steward of all creation.
