Artist Statement: Cosmological diagrams were often incorporated into medieval architectural settings in the form of beautiful and intricate patterns. This pair of paintings come from two such diagrams, one now found in Westminster Abbey in London, the other in Lausanne Cathedral in Switzerland. These symbolic maps are contemporary with each other and draw upon the same textual and philosophical sources. They are drawn with the architect’s tools: compass and square.

Stewardship II shows a design from the rose window of Lausanne Cathedral. The underlying schema is a marriage of circle and square. The stained glass panels which adorn the rose depict the created world and the labors which must be performed throughout the year. The individuals who have visited this cathedral for the last 8 centuries are taught by light radiating through colour glass what their stewardships are in relation to God’s creation.
