Artist Statement: I bought some local yarn for the first time and it came in these big loops that were different from the store-bought yarn I'd seen before. My friend, Kess, looped it around her arms to help as I rolled the yarn into a ball, making it easier to work with. I was fascinated by that gesture and the ways we help each other with our various creations. We are both artists and we bounce project ideas off of each other fairly often. My latest idea was wondering how I would be able to make a body cast of a whole arm, past the elbow. Together, we figured it out.
The act of creating can be a spiritual practice, especially when everything comes together and you really only understand why you made it after it’s fully completed. I’m not a mother, so when I think of women being divine creators I think of my female artist friends and all of the wonderful things they create and in turn, all of the things they help me create in my own artwork. It feels like magic and I’m lucky I can be part of it.
This wool is hand-dyed and held by the same arms that were molded for the bronze casting.
